About the trilogy

Daugter of the sea is an undersea, Chosen One fantasy meets classic coming-of-age story; a battle between good and evil, marfolk vs. nightdragons. First, standalone installment in adventure trilogy starring a young female protagonist. It is exciting, romantic and engaging with Icelandic mythology woven into the story. At its heart, the Mystic Runes series is a classic saga of Good vs. Evil. Elísa is an average sixteen-year-old girl who lives in the Westfjords in Iceland.

One night she finds herself drawn to the sea by an unseen force, hypnotized by a beautiful music and beckoned by a voice that calls to her. Lured to the water’s edge, Elísa is swallowed up by an enormous wave that drags her into the sea and everything goes dark. When she wakes, Elísa finds that she’s been transformed, turned into one of the marfolk who live in the Violet City on the bottom of the North Atlantic. The marfolk are the sons and daughters of the goddess Ósana, who grants those who perish at sea a new life as underwater guardians, protectors of the fragile balance between land and ocean. Elísa discovers that the marfolk suspect her of being the Daughter of the Sea, Ósana’s chosen one, who will save them from total annihilation. But is she the mysterious Daugther of the sea?

Following the events of Daughter of the Sea, Elísa’s adventures continue in the world of Renóra, where she meets four teenagers who, like her, possess supernatural powers drawn from the elements: earth, wind, fire, and energy. Renóra is home to three metropolises, cities of Gold, Silver, and Bronze, each of which have their own unique characters. When the Stone Goddess, Draxana threatens to destroy Renóra, Elísa and her friends must use their powers to protect the world and its people. The young heroes’ adventures take them on perilous quest around the world in search of talismans that will allow them to contact Draxana’s siblings, the Ancient Ones, who are the only beings in the universe who know how to defeat their malevolent sister. 

About the author

I hold a BA and a master’s degree in law from the University of Iceland and worked as a lawyer for two years before leaving my position to pursue my writing. I wrote my first novel, Daughter of the Sea, at the age of thirteen and spent a year rewriting the book twelve years later. My love of literature took root at a young age when I started reading fantasy novels and it’s a genre that remains close to my heart. Daughter of the Sea is the first installment in the Mystic Runes trilogy and was published in 2020 and was nominated for the 2020 Icelandic Literary Prize in the category of Children’s and YA literature. The second book in the series, The Bronze Harp, was published in October 2022 and was nominated for the Fjöruverðlaun in the category of Children’s and Young Adult Literature. The book also won the Bookseller’s award for best book in 2022 in the category of Children’s and Young Adult Literature. The series’ third and final installment, The Battle for Renóra, was published during the 2023 Book Flood.

Bókaflokkurinn gerist í hliðstæðum heimi þar sem Ísland er tengt ýmsum töfraheimum á dularfullan hátt. Aðalpersónan heitir Elísa og er sextán ára unglingur á Vestfjörðum. Í fyrstu bókinni ferðast hún neðansjávar og uppgötvar að hún er hluti af fornum spádómi marfólksins. Marþjóðinni stendur ógn af verstu óvættum hafsins, náttdrekunum, og á hafsbotni uppgötvar Elísa vatnamáttinn. Í annarri bókinni ferðast Elísa til annars heims, til landsins Renóru. Þar hittir hún fjóra unglinga frá mismunandi tímum íslandssögunnar sem eru líka með yfirnáttúrulega krafta: loft, jörð, eld og orku. Þau kalla sig gæslumenn grunnefnanna og hafa verið kölluð saman til að bjarga deygjandi heimi. Í þessari bók hefst vegferð þeirra til að bjarga Renóru frá steingyðjunni Draxönu, yngstu systur goðanna. Í þriðju bókinni standa gæslumennirnir frammi fyrir krefjandi ferðalagi sem fer með þau um gjörvallt langið. Dóttir hafsins er í raun forsaga og næstu tvær bækur eru aðalævintýrið.

Þegar ég var ung hafði ég engan áhuga á lestri. Ég las hægt og mér gekk illa á flestum lestrarprófum en það breyttist allt þegar ég byrjaði að lesa ævintýrabækur sem unglingur. Þá opnaðist fyrir mér nýr heimur og það varð ekki aftur snúið. Síðan þá var það draumurinn að skrifa og gefa út mína eigin fantasíubók. Sá draumur rættist árið 2020 þegar Dóttir hafsins, fyrsta bókin í þríleiknum Dulstafir, kom út. 

Ég var 13 ára þegar ég skrifaði fyrstu bókina og þá næstu skrifaði ég í beinu framhaldi. Mig langaði að skrifa fantasíu sem fjallaði um íslenskan ungling, einhvern sem ég gat samsamað mig með. Þannig kom Elísa til sögunnar en hana byggi ég að mikllu leiti á sjálfri mér. Ég skrifaði talsvert fyrir skúffuna á þessum tíma en þegar ég byrja lögfræðinni í háskólanum lagði ég skrifin til hliðar. Rúmum tólf árum seinna var ég að taka til í möppum í tölvunni og rekst á þessi gömlu handrit. Þegar ég las þau aftur ákvað ég að endurskrifa báðar bækurnar en byggja á upprunalegu handritunum. Fantasíubókmenntir hafa haft mikil áhrif á líf mitt. Þær eru bækurnar sem kveiktu lestraráhugann og gerðu það að verkum að ég er rithöfundur í dag.

Bækurnar í Dulstafa þríleiknum eru furðusögur og eru ætlaðar öllum sem hafa gaman af ævintýrum. Fyrsta bókin, Dóttir hafsins, kom út árið 2020 og var tilnefnd til Íslensku bókmenntaverðlaunanna í flokki barna- og ungmenna bókmennta árið 2020. Næsta bók, Bronsharpan kom út í október 2022 og var tilnefnd til Fjöruverðlaunanna og var valin besta barna- og unglingabókin árið 2022 af bóksölum. Þriðja bókin, Orrustan um Renóru kom síðan út hausið 2023.
